How to find a dog by microchip

Unfortunately, a dog’s microchip only contains a set of numbers. It does not act as a GPS tracker and it is impossible to track where a lost dog has run off to.
The microchip itself contains a set of numbers. When injected under the skin of a dog (or cat), it simply identifies this dog. For example, a dog is injected with a microchip with the number 546ХХХХХХХ. The same microchip will be entered into its veterinary passport, confirming that this passport belongs to this particular dog. This means that all vaccinations and examinations described in the passport definitely apply to this particular dog. This is important when it comes to rabies vaccination and when the dog travels abroad.

If the dog is purebred, the same microchip is entered into the pedigree. For example, before entering a competition, many dogs are checked to see if the microchip number in the dog itself matches the microchip number in the pedigree. The microchip is checked with a special scanner. These scanners are always available in veterinary clinics and police officers. And any owner can also buy a scanner for microchips.
During any medical procedure, the dog’s microchip is scanned. To prevent the substitution of dogs. For example, two visually similar German Shepherd puppies can be easily distinguished if their microchips are scanned.
How to find a dog by microchip? In each country of the European Union, any dog must be microchipped. And its microchip must be entered into the general microchip database of this country. The same rules apply in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, etc. But the laws are not observed so well there, so dogs with a microchip do not always have data in the general database of the country.
The microchip number is entered into the general database. And all the owner’s data is linked to this number: first name, last name, address and city, phone number and email. It is also visible when the dog had its last rabies vaccination. And who put the microchip (which veterinary clinic and doctor). If your dog is lost, then anyone who finds it will take it to a veterinary clinic, where they will scan the microchip number, enter it into the database and, having learned your data, call you. That is why if you bought a dog from a breeder in another country, you are obliged to register its microchip (even if it was installed in another country) in your database. Each country even has rules about how long after arrival you must contact a veterinarian to enter the microchip data into the animal database of your country. Usually it is 3-10 days after the dog arrives in the country.
If your dog has a microchip, but it is not registered, then this will not help find it. Well, unless you find a post on the Internet that a dog was found, microchip number XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. And then you will understand that this is your dog.
Each microchip is unique and individual. There are no duplicates of microchips. This is theoretically, of course. This is how it was intended when microchips for dogs were created. But the Chinese also produce microchips and sell them. And Chinese microchips sometimes have the same numbers! These are very long numbers, but they still match. Therefore, each country purchases microchips with a personal code assigned specifically to that country. Such microchips are made for each specific country. And there are no duplicates of such microchips. You can easily find out if your dog’s microchip was bought cheaply in China. Chinese microchips begin with the numbers 99, 999, 990. By the way, many databases of European countries simply do not accept Chinese microchips. And you will not be able to register your dog with a Chinese microchip in your country. Then you have to spend a long time explaining to the veterinarian why the dog has a so-called «gray microchip» (Chinese). Then the doctor, if he agrees, will put a new microchip from your country on your imported dog. And everything seems fine, but no. In fact, your dog will have two different microchips with two different numbers. And if somewhere they will look for a microchip with a scanner (at an exhibition, at a sports competition, during a flight abroad) and they see two microchips, then you will have problems and long explanations that you did not steal the dog. These are real stories. I have been breeding dogs for two decades and I know everything about microchips for dogs.
