Which dog is better: a Labrador or a Pitbull Terrier?
Let’s compare two opposite dog breeds: a Labrador and an American Pitbull Terrier. My name is Veronika Voitovska, I am a dog kennel owner, a doctor, a judge of dog shows in Europe, and a zoopsychologist.
Very often people search, choose and compare between a Labrador and a Pitbull Terrier. Both breeds are large, active, but there are several important differences.
Labradors are dogs with thick fur. That is, you will have to comb and brush the fur regularly. Take the Labrador to special grooming salons. Find this fur on the bed and in food when your Labrador is in the shedding period. Long hair can cause more reactions in people with allergies. American Pit Bull Terriers have short fur and are invisible at home. They do not need special care for their fur and do not need to be taken to grooming salons.
The size of a Labrador and a Pit Bull Terrier. A very important point. A beginner might think that both a Labrador and a Pit Bull Terrier are just two large breeds of dogs. But try putting a medium-sized Pit Bull Terrier weighing 20-25 kg in the trunk of a car. And then try putting a Labrador weighing 40 kg in the trunk of a car. You will immediately feel the difference. This difference will always be there — on the street, at home. Of course, size also affects the amount of food. Labradors eat twice as much as American Pit Bull Terriers. This increases monthly expenses. Now you have to pay not only for the grooming salon, but also twice as much for food. Loyalty to people. This is where things get interesting. After all, on the Internet they write everywhere that Labradors are cute family dogs. They only forget to mention that in professional cynology, Labradors help in hunting. And, naturally, they have all the hunting instincts. They are not cute at all, but real working dogs with the psyche of a working dog. But the total propaganda of Labradors as cute family dogs has led to the emergence of a large number of people who mate these Labradors just like that. Without cynological experience, without knowledge of genetics, even without the simplest pedigrees. That is, this is a mix of a bulldog and a rhinoceros, passed off as a cute Labrador. Such dogs are sold in huge quantities in every country. People who believe in fairy tales that Labradors are wonderful, excellent nannies for children and the kindest in the world, buy these dogs. And do not even raise them. They do not imagine that they bought a working dog (even if poorly bred and without a pedigree). From personal experience: my one-year-old pit bull terrier girl was attacked by a Labrador (aged 5 months) during training. She bit her ear. We treated this ear for six months! It simply did not heal, since dogs’ ears move, the wounds opened again and again. My well-mannered pit bull terrier did not fight back against this stupid Labrador girl. She knows that you can’t fight dogs.
Second situation. A man was walking with two Labradors. They saw a woman with a bag, reacted and rushed to bite her. They attacked a simple passerby, both of them! The woman fought back as best she could, the owner just stood there in shock. These are the consequences of thoughtless breeding of working dogs and selling them to inexperienced families as cute puppies. This is a disgrace and a disaster for the entire cynology.
At the moment, my American Pitbull Terrier kennel «Dognik Bulls» has 10 pit bulls. Half of them are already retired. So, my pitbull terriers have never bitten people in their lives. Here are real statistics, not a picture from the Internet. At the same time, some of my dogs were trained in «sports and protection training», they got great pleasure from training. But they never attacked anyone in real life. This is my merit, as a person who bought and bred only the best American pit bull terriers around the world. And also my merit as a trainer. And just a good, stable psyche of real purebred pit bull terriers.
